The album on hand is the result of an improvised live session by Grigori Perelman (drums), Alexey Stanchinskiy (bass, vocals), Ivan Izmalkin (baritone sax), and Sergey Plishka (guitar) at Flanger Studio. Moscow-based quartet Dusky Dive has called their musical style Stoned Jazz. Whether sedative or psychedelic substances have had an influence on the sounds of these six tracks, one can only assume. In the end, it is not neccessary, anyways.

On 36 minutes, Dusky Dive present a psychedelic and heavy sound that mostly fits the description of Desert Rock. Bonedry, dusty riffs move like a steady and remorseless sandstorm. Predominantly through the saxophone but also by the eclectic rhythms, a strong Jazz influence defines the soundscapes on "Flanger Studio Session". And finally, the movements of the album, rwching from calm melancholy to noisy insanity make this album very exciting. "Flanger Studio Session" is a release that will please fans of Slo Burn-like Desert Rock, MOOP-style Jazz, and Detieti's "Frogressive Punk".

"Das Album zur Vorabsingle „Sky“, die hier ebenfalls enthalten ist: Die „Flanger Studio Session“ von Dusky Dive ist offenbar tatsächlich einfach im titelgebenden Räumen einfach so entstanden, und wenn dem so ist, kann man nur staunen. Wer so schlüssige Stücke improvisiert, hat definitiv etwas drauf. Die Songs, auch mit ihren jazzigen, experimentellen Passagen, sind um Längen überzeugender als sauviele durchkomponierte Indiesachen dieser Zeit. Markant ist hier natürlich das Baritonsaxophon, das wie bei Dead Men Tells angenehm an Morphine erinnert.

Genregrenzen kennen die vier aus Moskau keine. Zwischendrin wird ein mostiger Rocksong zum Ska, ein Track eröffnet mit Industrial, irgendwo wehen Tumbleweeds durch eine leere Wüstenlandschaft, die Band verliert sich in mitreißendem Gniedeln oder kreiert die fröhlichsten Popsongs: Man kann nur ehrfürchtig niederknien davor, dass all dies improvisiert sein soll. Die wissen, was sie tun: Gitarrist Sergey Plishka, Baritonsaxophonist Ivan Izmalkin, Bassit und Sänger Aleksey Stanchinskiy sowie Schlagzeuger Grigory Perelman.

Eine gute halbe Stunde dauert dieses Impro-Debüt, das wirkt, als wäre es weit länger, weil es so abwechslungsreich ist. Und über allem schwebt dieses wundervolle Saxophon, das hier zwar die jazzige Note einbringt, aber nicht als Lärm, den besorgen im Zweifelsfall die anderen drei Musiker. Gelungen!"

"Jana. Sei que já é um lugar comum, mas por vezes não consigo começar desta forma. Principalmente ao som do sax. Até a própria banda chama o seu som de stoned jazz e, por uma vez na vida, acho que é uma excelente e fiel representação daquilo que o som da banda. Temos o groove meio paquidérmico do stoner (algumas vezes até os Om nos chegam à mente), ambientes psicadélicos e depois o sax a fazer o resto. Claro que isto é uma explicação muito simplista do que podemos ter aqui mas é uma boa forma de começar e verão que concordarão assim que começarem a ouvir. Cuidado é que depois é difícil de se libertarem do vício.
